Guitars FAQs

What is the difference between an acoustic guitar and a classical guitar?

The classical guitar is the design of the old, original guitar. The neck is wider, as are the strings. They are generally smaller bodied that acoustic guitars, with lighter bracing inside. Heavy bracing isn’t necessary because they use nylon strings, unlike some acoustic guitars, which use steel strings.

I am just looking to start playing the guitar. Is it better to start on an acoustic or an electrical guitar?

The principles are the same for both. Because the fundamental principles of guitar playing can be taught on the acoustic guitar as a reasonable volume indoors, most people learn the guitar this way. However, if you are looking to start a band right away, it might be best to learn the modifications of your amp and guitar alongside notes and tuning.

What kinds of accessories do I need to get started?

If you are learning on an electric guitar, you will need a guitar amp to amplify your sound. Otherwise what you play will be very quiet and quite different than what it would be with an amp.

For the acoustic guitar you aren’t required to have anything more than a working guitar to get started. Inevitably you will break strings and need new ones, and many players prefer to strum with a guitar pick. However, none of this is strictly required to get started.
