Electric Guitar
The electric guitar has come a long way in design since Paul’s “log,” but the operating premise is basically the same. These guitars use pickups to convert the vibration of its strings into an electrical current, which is made louder by a guitar amp and speaker. Amplifiers also allow different distortion effects.
The effect of the electric guitar has had a tremendous effect not only within music, but in popular culture as well. When Bob Dylan switched from acoustic to electric guitar during a folk festival, there were strong emotions attached to that decision, some of them angry. This event showed the passion people had for guitar music, as well as the power the electric guitar had over the country’s collective consciousness.
The electric guitar has never really lost its place at the forefront of contemporary music since that time, and it doesn’t appear to be going anywhere. It is hard to play any kind of large concert without the benefit of electric guitars, though acoustic guitars can also be amplified. Still, the electric guitar did much to reinvent how live music is experienced and appreciated.
